Navigating Challenges: The Journey of Bluenose-Ii Amid Steering Troubles

The Bluenose-Ii, an iconic symbol of maritime heritage and tourism, has recently faced a series of operational challenges that have affected its sailing schedule and public engagements. Most notably, the vessel ran aground in the St. Lawrence Seaway off Cornwall, Ontario, on June 25, 2019. The incident occurred at approximately 07:30 a.m., but fortunately, it resulted in no reported injuries, damages, or environmental pollution. After some effort, the ship was refloated and safely returned to Cornwall, allowing it to continue its operations without significant long-term impact.

However, the grounding incident was not the only issue plaguing the Bluenose-Ii. The vessel has been grappling with persistent steering problems that have raised concerns among its operators and patrons. Transportation Minister Geoff MacLellan expressed optimism that these steering issues might be resolved during the current off-season, as discussions with engineers and maritime experts are underway. The ship has undergone a multimillion-dollar refit over several years, aimed at upgrading its systems, but it seems the steering complications have persisted, marred by a few interruptions in its sailing schedule.

Indeed, the Bluenose-Ii had to cancel sailings on two occasions in late August 2015 due to steering failures. Maintenance crews were deployed to diagnose and rectify the problem, marking the second time in that season that operations were disrupted by similar issues. Despite these setbacks, the vessel had a successful inaugural sailing season, reportedly attracting over 58,000 visitors since its launch on July 19. Unfortunately, the popularity of tours meant that several were cancelled, much to the dismay of those eager to experience this majestic vessel.
