Stranded in the Storm: The Blue-Shark's Ongoing Crisis

The situation surrounding the Blue-Shark has escalated following its grounding near the resort village of Vityazevo, Russia. On November 25, 2023, this bulk carrier, originally en route from the MMK Metalurji facility in Iskenderun to Taman carrying a cargo of barley destined for Egypt, encountered mechanical issues amidst hurricane-force winds and towering 30-foot waves. This severe weather disrupted its mooring, causing the vessel to drift and ultimately run aground approximately 440 meters from the coast at coordinates 44° 59.00 N, 037° 14.48' E on November 26 at 1 a.m.

Currently, the condition of the Blue-Shark is being assessed, with preliminary checks revealing no visible holes in the hull. All 21 crew members, hailing from Syria, India, and Egypt, have been successfully removed from the vessel and are now waiting ashore for towing assistance. Unfortunately, it remains unclear when such assistance might arrive, as adverse weather conditions continue to complicate rescue efforts.

As authorities evaluate the vessel's situation, divers have been called in to examine the bottom of the ship, but they will require additional time to determine the full scope of the salvage operation.
