Navigating Challenges: The Recent Incidents Involving Blue-Star-Chios

Blue-Star-Chios, a ferry operating in the Aegean Sea, has been at the center of three notable incidents in recent months that highlight both the humanitarian challenges facing the region and the operational hurdles ferries encounter. On June 1, the vessel performed a commendable act of rescue, saving 75 migrants from a sinking yacht off the coast of Karpathos. The migrants, including 43 men, 14 women, and 15 minors, had issued a distress call approximately 14.4 nautical miles from the island when the vessel began to take on water. Responding to the emergency, the Blue-Star-Chios altered its course and took all migrants aboard. Following a meticulous investigation, three of the rescued Iranians were identified and arrested for human trafficking offenses, emphasizing the ongoing crisis of illegal immigration in the region.

However, challenges have not been limited to humanitarian efforts. Earlier, on April 13, 2025, Blue-Star-Chios experienced a technical malfunction upon arrival at Halki Port, related to its central ramp's electric folding system. Although the ferry managed to safely moor and disembark its passengers and vehicles, the incident raised concerns about the vessel's operational capabilities. The ship was initially grounded by the Halki Port Authority until a seaworthiness certificate was provided, allowing it to resume its scheduled route across several ports in the Aegean.

On another note, on September 7, a crew member aboard the Blue-Star-Chios sustained a serious injury, resulting in a fracture of the metacarpal bone. Medical assistance was promptly provided, underscoring the necessity of maintaining health and safety standards on board amid operational pressures.
