Troubles and Triumphs of the Blue-Star-Delos

The Blue-Star-Delos has been a vessel of both operational challenges and commendable service in recent months, drawing attention for its incidents within the busy maritime landscape of Greece. On April 7, 2024, while maneuvering into the port of Mytilene, the ferry experienced a significant incident when a mooring cable became entangled with its starboard propeller. This unfortunate event resulted in the Central Port Authority of Mytilini implementing a ban on the ship's departure until further inspections were complete. Fortunately, a diver swiftly remedied the situation, entangling the rope with no additional damage reported to the vessel. With a sailing certificate presented by its monitoring classification society, the ban was eventually lifted, allowing the ferry to continue its journey across several destinations including Chios and Piraeus, albeit after a follow-up inspection at Piraeus where another temporary sailing ban was enforced until approval was granted once more.

Earlier in the journey, on September 14, 2023, the vessel was called into action under intense circumstances when it made an emergency approach at the port of Lavrio to disembark a 77-year-old passenger who required urgent medical attention. The compassionate response and swift actions of the crew culminated in the safe transfer of the ill passenger to a local hospital, showcasing the ship’s commitment to passenger safety.

However, not all news has been positive. On June 16, 2023, a trainee engineer aboard the Blue-Star-Delos suffered a knee injury, prompting the Central Port Authority of Piraeus to initiate an investigation into the incident. This event added to the list of concerns regarding crew safety and operational protocols aboard the vessel.

Despite these setbacks, the Blue-Star-Delos continues to navigate the challenges of maritime operation, balancing emergencies, inspections, and the rigorous demands of maintaining both seaworthiness and passenger safety.
