Bonita: A Troubled Voyage Through Stormy Seas and Technical Challenges

Bonita, a vessel known for navigating challenging waters, has recently been at the center of multiple maritime incidents, showcasing the unpredictable nature of sea travel. On June 20, 2025, the ship experienced a significant engine failure approximately five miles north of Guernsey while transporting sand from Terneuzen to St Sampson's. The situation required immediate assistance, leading to the deployment of a French emergency tug from Cherbourg to help. As the breakdown could not be rectified at sea, another tug was sent from the south coast of England to tow Bonita to St Peter Port harbour, where it finally arrived on June 21 at around 03:15 a.m. Fortunately, there were no injuries during this incident, and thankfully, no pollution was reported, but the vessel remained stationary as of June 24, awaiting further instructions.

Adding to its tumultuous journey, Bonita was recently involved in a collision just one day after leaving a repair port in Rotterdam. On February 13, 2020, the ship collided with the self-propelled tank barge 'Noordereiland' at the Houtrib lock in Lelystad. The vessel struggled to reverse its engine upon entering the lock, resulting in a collision with the incoming tanker and severely damaging the lock gate. Following the accident, both vessels were detained by the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) for investigation, with initial findings suggesting that a defect on Bonita may have contributed to the mishap. No injuries were reported from the incident, and following inspections, Bonita resumed its voyage towards Grimsby after necessary repairs.

After overcoming significant challenges, including a grounding incident in the Lurö archipelago, Bonita was finally refloated on June 25 after a cargo of animal food was lightened and ballast was adjusted to stabilize the vessel. She was towed to Hällekis in Västergötland, arriving around 7:55 p.m. Despite sustaining damage from the grounding, the ship managed to navigate through Vänern with the aid of pumps that addressed the leaks in its hull. The persistent issues have resulted in a sailing ban issued by the Swedish Transport Agency, drawing close scrutiny from the vessel's owners and insurance representatives regarding future operations. Following these events, Bonita docked in Rotterdam on July 4, where she remained stationary in Bolnes, marking another chapter in the vessel's volatile history.
