Bro-Anna, a tanker with a history of operational challenges, has faced a series of incidents highlighting vulnerabilities in maritime navigation. Most notably, on August 29, 2017, the vessel suffered a critical engine blackout while transiting the Beauharnois Canal in Montérégie, Canada. Investigators from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) were dispatched to the scene after the ship ran aground at approximately 6:10 p.m. Although the tanker was successfully refloated by the morning of August 30 and moved upstream of Lock 4, the incident warranted an investigation into the engine failure, prompting discussions with the crew and examination of the engine room to determine the underlying causes.

Earlier in its service, on June 2, 2012, the crew of Bro-Anna observed a significant safety hazard during its voyage on the Kiel Canal. The crew reported that approximately 10-15 meters of the embankment had slipped at canal km 60 near Westerrönfeld. The ship’s immediate alert led authorities to block canal access, allowing canal workers to investigate what could have been a potentially dangerous situation exacerbated by the wakes of passing vessels.

The challenges faced by the Bro-Anna are further underscored by an earlier incident on September 24, 2010, shortly after its departure from Rotterdam towards Port Jerome. The vessel encountered machine failure, prompting a call for two tugs to assist in towing the ship to Poorters Harbour, where the crew managed to restart the main engine. Following this, the tanker slowly continued its journey towards Hoek van Holland.
