The maritime vessel Budva has found itself at the center of significant incidents impacting its operational history in recent years. On May 2, 2020, German police conducted a search of the vessel in Hamburg, where they uncovered a staggering 500 kg of cocaine concealed in the cargo area. This operation was the culmination of a coordinated effort by law enforcement agencies from Montenegro, Britain, the Netherlands, and the U.S. DEA, targeting drug trafficking routes between South America and Europe. Following this discovery, a Montenegrin crew member, Mladen Radulovic, was arrested, while the remaining 22 crew members were questioned by authorities.

Despite the serious nature of the drug bust, the Budva continued its operations. On May 4, shortly after the incident, the vessel set sail for Lagos, Nigeria, with an expected arrival date of May 19. Tihomir Mirkovic, the chief of the Montenegrin state shipping company Barska plovidba, asserted that the vessel departed with all necessary permits and attempted to downplay the severity of the circumstances surrounding the arrest and earlier seizure of drugs.

In a separate incident, on August 6, 2020, the Budva was involved in a maritime allision in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, when the bulk carrier Pluto collided with its stern while maneuvering to its berth. The Budva, which had been moored in the port since July 27, sustained hull breaches and significant damage to its starboard bow, with several of its mooring lines snapping during the impact. This incident further illustrates the myriad challenges facing the Budva as it navigates both operational hurdles and international scrutiny in a complex maritime landscape.
