Bute Faces Multiple Technical Challenges Impacting Service

Bute, the essential ferry operating between Wemyss Bay and Rothesay, has recently encountered a series of technical challenges that have significantly disrupted its service schedule. The latest incident occurred on March 16, 2025, when the vessel suffered a technical issue with its rescue boat, leading to the cancellation of multiple sailings. Affected departures included Rothesay at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., and Wemyss Bay at 1:05 p.m. and 3:05 p.m. CalMac, the operator of the service, promised to provide updates as they became available, highlighting the ongoing operational difficulties faced by the ferry service.

Prior to this, on April 7, similar issues arose when Bute experienced a technical problem with its rescue boat that necessitated investigations in the port of Rothesay. This incident forced the cancellation of the 1:00 p.m. departure from Rothesay and the 2:05 p.m. departure from Wemyss Bay. Fortunately, after addressing the technical issue, Bute resumed service just a couple of hours later, at 3:00 p.m.

Adding to the vessel's woes, Bute was withdrawn from service on November 20 due to a significant fault with the aft main engine crankshaft. Initially, there were hopes for a swift return by December 6; however, ongoing repairs forced CalMac to adjust their timelines and expectations. Passengers have been urged to travel on foot to accommodate the limited vehicle capacity resulting from the withdrawal of Bute from the dual ferry service. As CalMac navigates through these operational hurdles, a clearer timeline for Bute's return remains uncertain, with replacement components still being sourced.
