Challenges at Sea: The Journey of the Calumet and Its Recent Struggles

The maritime journey of the Calumet, a notable 629-foot laker, has been recently punctuated by a series of challenges that highlight the unpredictable conditions mariners face in the Great Lakes region. On October 21, 2021, the vessel was navigating the Saginaw River en route from Detroit to Saginaw with a substantial cargo of 19,000 tons of limestone when it encountered strong wind gusts. These gusts forced the ship out of the fairway, causing it to run aground on the embankment near Bay City, Michigan. The incident not only stalled the vessel but also obstructed traffic on the river and the adjacent Lake State Railroad Bridge. Fortunately, a tug was dispatched to assist in refloating operations, and after several hours, normal navigation resumed the following morning.

Earlier, the Calumet faced an equally daunting situation on April 6, 2018, when ice damage occurred while it was sailing above the Soo Locks on the St. Marys River. As the vessel struggled against the icy waters, it was forced to return to the Soo Locks for emergency repairs. After a brief hiatus, it resumed its journey to Toledo, demonstrating both resilience and the exigencies of marine operations in harsh conditions.

Additionally, just a few months prior, on August 11, the Calumet experienced another grounding incident, this time on the north side of Sugar Island in the St. Marys River. The vessel was successfully refloated later that week after the U.S. Coast Guard approved a salvage plan. The stoppage of commercial traffic along the river lasted until the Army Corp of Engineers conducted a thorough inspection of the channel, confirming that no debris remained to obstruct passage.

These incidents underline the dynamic and often hazardous nature of navigation within the Great Lakes.
