Canopus-S, a vessel with a storied history, has recently been embroiled in a series of significant events that have altered its trajectory. On January 4, 2019, tragedy struck when Captain Valery Cerkezov, the Russian Master of the Canopus-S, was found dead in his cabin during the ship's transit through the Dardanelles. The incident, which occurred at 7:15 p.m. as the vessel was en route from Taganrog to Iskenderun, led to an immediate halt in operations. The ship anchored at Erenkoy on January 7 at 5 a.m. to facilitate necessary investigations and to address the procedural formalities surrounding the captain's untimely death.

Following this incident, the vessel underwent a significant change in ownership. The Canopus-S was sold for $2.8 million to German buyers, Lubeca Marina, marking a new chapter in the ship's life. This sale reflects not only a shift in asset management but also highlights the ongoing demand for maritime assets in the global market.

In addition to its operational challenges and ownership transition, Canopus-S has had its share of maritime incidents. In 2010, the vessel was involved in an allision with the berthed icebreaker 'Kapitan Krutov' while maneuvering to Berth 3 of Yeisk port in the Azov sea. Fortunately, the freighter remained undamaged, although the icebreaker sustained significant damage to its searchlight platform and bulwark.
