Local authorities were notified, and the ship's doctor pronounced her dead on site. A preliminary investigation was launched by the Mykonos Port Authority, indicating the necessity for follow-up measures that address passenger health and emergency protocols. The deceased’s body was subsequently scheduled to be transported to the Celebrity Equinox's next port in Civitavecchia.

Adding to the concerning narrative surrounding the Celebrity Equinox is a federal lawsuit filed by the family of Robert Jones, a 79-year-old passenger who died from a heart attack on August 15, 2022. His widow, Marilyn Jones, claimed in her lawsuit that the ship's staff failed to preserve her husband's body properly, leaving it in a severely decomposed state when they eventually docked back in Florida. The lawsuit, filed in April 2023, highlights the emotional trauma faced by families in the unfortunate event of a death on board, as the Jones family was denied an open-casket funeral due to the condition of Robert's remains. Marilyn alleges that the staff’s advice to keep the body aboard the ship and the lack of adequate facilities for managing such situations constitutes negligence, citing the need for better policies and facilities to manage mortality on cruises.

Lastly, a separate health concern arose when a passenger tested positive for Covid-19 on board the Celebrity Equinox during a cruise that began on July 30, 2021. This incident took place six days into the ship's first voyage from the U.S. after a 15-month hiatus, underscoring ongoing challenges related to health safety protocols aboard cruise ships, even for fully vaccinated passengers.
