The cruise industry continues to grapple with health and safety challenges aboard various vessels, and the Celebrity-Summit has recently been at the center of a series of troubling incidents. In May 2023, while on a cruise to Bermuda, the ship reported an outbreak of norovirus affecting 177 individuals, including 152 passengers and 25 crew members. The symptoms predominantly featured diarrhea and vomiting, prompting a swift response from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as the cruise line communicated the situation within their framework. The vessel had been carrying 2,144 passengers, and the CDC noted the outbreak occurred during the ten-day journey from Bayonne, New Jersey.

Fast forward to June 2024, another health scare was reported with 68 passengers succumbing to a norovirus outbreak at the end of a week-long cruise to Alaska, which had embarked with 2,264 guests. In a bid to manage the outbreak, the cruise line implemented protocols including isolating affected individuals and sanitizing the ship, which was a vital step in ensuring the safety of the remaining passengers.

On a separate note, the Celebrity Summit faced a significant safety incident in June 2022, when two crew members were medevaced due to chemical burns approximately 69 miles off the Virginia Beach coast. The ship’s crew sought assistance from the US Coast Guard, which promptly deployed a helicopter to airlift not only the injured crew members but also a physician to provide immediate medical assistance.

Moreover, it is noteworthy that crew members who face injuries aboard cruise lines like the Celebrity-Summit do not have straightforward recourse in the event of accidents. They are bound by arbitration agreements that restrict their legal options, a point that raises concerns regarding worker rights and company liabilities in maritime industries. As Celebrity-Summit continues its voyages, the combination of health risks and crew safety incidents necessitates the need for rigorous protocols and improved contractual fairness to ensure the well-being of all who work and travel onboard.
