Safety Concerns Surround Ferry Operations in the Cyclades

The operations of Championsleague-Jet1 and other ferries in the Cyclades have recently raised safety concerns following a series of incidents. On May 29, 2025, the Naxos Port Authority received a distress signal from the Captain of the Championsleague-Jet1, reporting that a 79-year-old Brazilian passenger had suffered a fainting episode on board during its journey from Piraeus to various islands, including Naxos. Prompt first aid was provided by a private doctor onboard, and upon arrival in Naxos, the passenger was swiftly transported to the local hospital and discharged the same day, allowing the ferry to continue its journey to Thira.

However, the safety protocols for ferry operations were called into question in a separate incident involving the ferry 'Jumbo Jet'. On September 12, 2024, during disembarkation at the port of Mykonos, the ship unexpectedly moved forward, resulting in the ramp becoming inclined towards the sea and causing some luggage, along with a baby carriage, to fall overboard. A quick-thinking group of passengers managed to save a man holding a baby from a potentially dangerous fall, although several individuals sustained minor injuries. Following the incident, the captain was arrested for dangerous interference in transport operations but was later released after further investigation.

Adding to the concerns of passenger safety, another incident on the same vessel, the 'Jumbo Jet', highlighted further risks when a 66-year-old Australian passenger was injured by an automatically closing toilet door during a transit from Piraeus to Naxos on September 10, 2024. Although the injury was serious enough for the Port Authority of Syros to be alerted, the passenger opted to continue to Naxos without medical assistance, underscoring the urgent need for improved safety measures aboard these vessels.

These incidents collectively spark significant dialogue around the safety of ferry operations in the Cyclades, emphasizing the need for rigorous adherence to safety protocols and proactive measures to protect passengers during their travels.
