Chitral Faces Extended Repairs After August Incident in Chittagong

The vessel Chitral, which suffered significant propeller damage following an allision with the bulk carrier 'Sarwar Jahan' (IMO: 9233600) on August 24, is currently undergoing an extended repair process. The incident occurred amid adverse weather conditions at the outer anchorage of Chittagong Port, leading to the vessel being stranded and awaiting assistance.

Initially stationed at Chittagong Anchorage, the Chitral was slow to see remedial action. After the cargo of 25,000 tonnes of imported clinker was successfully unloaded—originally destined for Mongla Port—the vessel’s damaged state became apparent. An underwater survey was scheduled for September 4, with preliminary work involving the removal of entangled chains from the propeller.

On October 11, it was reported that the Chitral remained stationary, still waiting for a tug from Sri Lanka to facilitate her transport for dry docking in Colombo. Subsequently, on October 23, the vessel was towed by the tug 'De Tian' to Hambantota, where it currently lies under repair. However, as of late October, there has been no definitive timeline for when repairs will be completed, leaving the vessel’s operational status uncertain.
