Christian-Radich: A Calendar of Medical Emergencies at Sea

The sail training ship Christian-Radich has recently been the focus of multiple medical evacuation operations, highlighting the challenges faced by maritime crews during their voyages. On March 12, 2022, a sick crew member required urgent medical assistance while the vessel was navigating the Alboran Sea near Algeciras. The situation was promptly addressed by the MRCC in Madrid, which coordinated a medical evacuation. The CSS Tarifa mobilized the SAR boat 'Salvamar Denébola' to retrieve the crew member along with a doctor, ensuring safe transportation to shore.

Fast forward to December 14, 2023, the 'Christian Radich' was once again in need of medical intervention. While sailing from Funchal to Las Palmas, a crew member fell ill approximately 85 nautical miles north of Gran Canaria. The CCS Las Palmas of Salvamento Marítimo acted swiftly by dispatching the SAR helicopter Helimer 206 to the scene. The medical team successfully hoisted the patient from the ship and transported them to the Doctor Negrín Hospital, emphasizing the importance of timely medical response in maritime operations.

Most recently, on December 29, 2024, the 'Christian Radich' initiated yet another medical evacuation after a crew member suffered a blow to the head. The Helimer 202 SAR helicopter was again called into action, dispatched by the same CCS Las Palmas authority. This operation concluded with the safe transfer of the injured person to the Negrín Hospital in Las Palmas at 5:40 a.m. local time.

These incidents underscore not just the unpredictability of sea voyages but also the crucial role of search and rescue operations in safeguarding the health and safety of maritime personnel.
