Tensions Rise as Pirates Attempt to Hijack Chrystal-Arctic

On May 10, 2024, the Chrystal-Arctic, a tanker en route from Vadinar to Ain Sukhna, encountered a critical security incident approximately 100 nautical miles off the coast of Somalia. Six armed individuals in a small skiff harbored intentions of hijacking the vessel, prompting the ship's armed guards to respond with warning shots. This escalation led to an exchange of fire, after which the Chrystal-Arctic effectively maneuvered to evade the attack, while the skiff retreated.

The timely presence of a frigate from EUNAVFOR Operation Atalanta proved crucial, as they intercepted the suspected pirates shortly after the incident. The European naval forces not only secured the physical safety of the pirates but also provided medical assistance for injuries sustained during the altercation, although it remains uncertain whether these injuries were inflicted by the guards' warning shots or occurred during the skirmish.

Following their apprehension, the six pirates were transported for legal processing in Seychelles. On May 15, five of the suspects were placed in pre-trial detention, while a sixth, aged just 20, was airlifted to a hospital for urgent care.
