Challenges Faced by the Ciudad-De-Valencia: A Comprehensive Overview

The ferry Ciudad-De-Valencia, operated by Grupo Armas Trasmediterránea on the Cádiz-Canarias route, has recently encountered several significant challenges that reflect the complexities of maritime operations. On August 11, 2024, the vessel faced a substantial delay of at least 16 hours in its scheduled departure from the port of Arrecife de Lanzarote. The unforeseen setback was due to an accident involving the ship's captain during loading and unloading operations. Following the incident, the captain was evacuated to a hospital in Lanzarote, prompting a swift response from various maritime authorities including the Las Palmas Maritime Authority and the Civil Guard. After several hours of coordination, the first officer was promoted to captain, with additional support provided by a Spanish captain from the chartering company. The ship ultimately resumed its journey toward Cádiz later that day.

In addition to crew-related incidents, Ciudad-De-Valencia also experienced a technical breakdown. On August 31, 2024, the ferry suffered an engine failure while en route, leading to a five-hour delay in its departure from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. This situation necessitated the involvement of a specialized workshop to undertake repairs, leading to an adjusted arrival time of September 2 at midday.

Moreover, on June 25, 2025, the ferry was again in the news due to a medical emergency involving a crew member who required urgent evacuation. Salvamento Maritimo deployed the Helimer 201 helicopter to facilitate the medical evacuation 146 miles northeast of Arrecife. Coordinated by the National Commissions of Science and Technology in Madrid, Las Palmas, and Tenerife, the crew member was successfully transferred to Arrecife and treated by medical personnel upon arrival.
