Cma-Cgm-Bianca has recently found itself in the spotlight due to several incidents that illustrate the unpredictable challenges faced by maritime operations. Most notably, on August 2, 2020, severe, unforecasted winds led this container ship to break away from its moorings at the Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal in New Orleans. According to the National Transportation Safety Board’s Marine Accident Brief 21/18, the incident occurred during cargo operations when a localized thunderstorm struck the area. Ten out of the ship's 16 mooring lines parted in the gale-force winds, allowing the vessel to drift away from the pier, resulting in significant damages and a spilled cargo of plastic pellets, known as nurdles.Reports indicate that the storm appeared suddenly, transforming routine operations into a dangerous situation within minutes. As rain began to fall at 1:50 p.m., winds escalated to intense levels, with gusts reported as high as 73 mph—far exceeding the 31 mph recorded by the nearest official weather station. The master of the Cma-Cgm-Bianca described the conditions akin to a tornado, with crane operations severely hampered as containers struck the ship. An extremely damaged container fell and released thousands of nurdles into the river, contributing to environmental concerns. Overall, the incident incurred damages totaling approximately $15.1 million, highlighting the potential financial repercussions of natural events on shipping operations.But this is not the only instance that has tested the resolve of the Cma-Cgm-Bianca. Earlier, in October 2015, the ship was involved in a medical emergency when its captain fell seriously ill while 10 miles off the coast of La Réunion. The CROSS Réunion coordinated an urgent medevac, deploying a helicopter for the captain’s evacuation to a hospital, showcasing the logistical and health challenges that can arise even in the absence of severe weather.These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the volatile nature of maritime operations, underscoring the importance of readiness for unanticipated challenges.
