Coastal-Celebration Undergoes Major Repairs Amidst Fleet Overhaul

The Coastal-Celebration is currently at the center of B.C. Ferries' substantial maintenance initiative aimed at rectifying chronic mechanical issues within its Coastal class fleet. On March 18, 2024, B.C. Ferries announced that it would forgo pursuing an insurance claim for engine problems across its three Coastal class vessels, instead choosing to front the estimated $8.5 million cost from its contingency fund, designed for such significant repairs.

The need for these repairs stems from operational delays and propulsion system complications that have plagued the fleet. The 'Coastal Celebration' was notably impacted, experiencing delays due to a mechanical failure with its propulsion system that ultimately resulted in the cancellation of multiple sailings on January 15, 2024. To mitigate disruptions, B.C. Ferries strived to accommodate affected passengers by rerouting travelers to alternative sailings.

Further complicating matters, operational modifications had previously been made to the 'Coastal Celebration'. This included rerouting the vessel from October 29, 2023, to November 26, necessitated by driveshaft motor issues that became apparent in the ferry's performance. These measures aimed to prolong the functionality of the fleet while repairs were systematically planned. As such, all three Coastal Class vessels, including the Coastal Celebration, are set to receive new drive motors to address wear and tear calmly.

Arriving at the Victoria Shipyard on March 6, 2024, the 'Coastal Celebration' is undergoing repairs and a detailed refit that will keep the vessel out of service until April. Post-repair, the 'Coastal Inspiration' will follow suit for similar treatment. In light of these operational disruptions, B.C. Ferries has announced an additional 192 sailings between March 14 and April 2 to accommodate travelers during the busy spring break period, including additional service surrounding the Easter weekend.

As B.C. Ferries progresses with these critical repairs, the company aims to improve the reliability of its services and reduce future operational challenges, particularly as all three vessels will see the implementation of variable-speed motors. This modernization is crucial for the sustainability of the Coastal fleet and promises to enhance the client experience in the long run.
