Challenges and Repairs: The Journey of Coastal-Renaissance

The Coastal-Renaissance has faced a series of challenges in its operations, showcasing the unpredictability of maritime transport. Most recently, on April 21, 2024, a noon sailing was delayed due to a medical emergency involving a passenger on board. Ambulance paramedics were dispatched to provide assistance, leading to a delay of 54 minutes before the vessel could set sail from Swartz Bay. Though the immediate situation was resolved, it highlights the importance of swift emergency responses in maintaining passenger safety and service reliability.

Earlier, on July 9, 2021, the Coastal-Renaissance faced another setback when it suffered a mechanical problem while traversing the Horseshoe Bay-Departure Bay route. This incident resulted in a significant three-sailing wait, prompting B.C. Ferries to advise travelers to consider alternate routes, such as the Duke Point-Tsawwassen option, to avoid further delays. Such mechanical issues can disrupt schedules and inconvenience passengers, underscoring the ongoing need for maintenance and timely repairs.

In a proactive response to ensure the vessel’s reliability, the Coastal-Renaissance was drydocked on May 15, 2021, at Seaspan’s Vancouver Drydock for essential repairs to one of its propeller hubs. The drydocking, which aimed to enhance the performance and safety of the vessel, was scheduled for completion by May 22, allowing the ferry to resume its services on the Tsawwassen to Duke Point route by May 23.
