Troubled Waters: The Challenges Facing the Alexandra-1

Alexandra-1, a Malta-flagged cargo vessel with a history of safety concerns, recently faced yet another setback when it was detained in Karasu on June 8, 2026. This latest detention marks a continuing trend for the ship, which previously experienced issues during its operations. During the recent inspection, officials identified a staggering 28 deficiencies, six of which were deemed serious enough to warrant immediate detention. The highlighted deficiencies included critical elements such as inadequate liferafts, corrosion of the hull, and failure to meet minimum rest hours for crew, raising questions about the vessel's operational safety and compliance with maritime regulations. After two days of scrutiny, the Alexandra-1 was released on June 10, setting a course for Rostov-on-Don, Russia, in what many hope will be a smoother journey. However, skepticism surrounding its seaworthiness remains, particularly in light of previous detentions, including an incident on October 8, 2025, in Izmir where 11 deficiencies were noted. Historical incidents have also cast a shadow on the vessel’s reputation; for instance, back on March 3, 2010, the Alexandra-1 found itself adrift off Istanbul, narrowly avoiding running aground while en route from Iskelesi to Rostov. Fortunately, the situation was salvaged thanks to the prompt response of the tugs “Kurtarma 3”, “Kurtarma 6”, and the lifeboat “Kıyı Emniyeti 10”, which assisted in securing the ship and ensuring the safety of its 13 crew members. As the Alexandra-1 continues its operations, its past challenges serve as a pressing reminder of the importance of strict adherence to maritime safety standards and the ongoing need for thorough inspections to safeguard not only crews aboard, but also the larger marine environment.
