Loch-Portain Faces Extended Service Interruptions Due to Mechanical Issues

The Loch-Portain, a vital ferry operating on the Berneray - Leverburgh route, has recently encountered a series of mechanical challenges that have led to multiple sailing cancellations and significant service interruptions. Initially, on June 19, the vessel was forced to undergo maintenance and further investigations concerning its newly installed main engines and gearboxes. This necessary upkeep resulted in the cancellation of several sailings, including departures from Berneray and Leverburgh on June 24.

The situation worsened on June 27 when the Loch-Portain suffered a technical issue affecting one of its engines, which prompted additional cancellation of sailings due to both this mechanical difficulty and external weather restrictions. Sailings scheduled for June 28 were subsequently halted, but the swift repair work allowed the ferry to return to service later that same day.

Despite the brief resumption of service, ongoing mechanical concerns necessitated further intervention. From June 29 until July 3, the ferry was once again sidelined for required maintenance, forcing passengers to rely on other vessels like the spare ferry 'Glen Sannox' for their travels.

In a significant escalation of the situation, the Loch-Portain was officially removed from service from July 10 to July 19 to conduct deeper investigations into persistent gearbox issues. This latest development followed the unfortunate cancellation of services on July 9 due to the same gearbox problems. In the interim, the 'Glen Sannox' was redeployed to operate the essential inter-island service while plans for additional support vessels were adjusted.

As service disruptions continue to unfold, the future of the Loch-Portain's operations remains uncertain as stakeholders assess the long-term reliability of the vessel amidst recurring mechanical failures.
