Collision Aftermath: The Alsu Incident Examined

In their detailed accounts, both Erarslan and Evciman described instances where their radar successfully detected the presence of the 'Tuğberk İmamoğlu', yet it did not show up on their AIS system, which was operational. They claimed a miscommunication occurred between the vessels just before the incident, highlighting that the 'Tuğberk İmamoğlu' was instructed to steer to port yet instead turned starboard, resulting in an unavoidable collision. Witnesses stated that the collision took place at approximately 03:13 a.m., suggesting that poor bridge discipline and a lack of lookout contributed significantly to the disaster.

A preliminary report from investigators has indicated that the absence of a lookout combined with ineffective watchkeeping practices aboard both vessels was a critical factor in this calamity.
