Tragic Fate of the Ocean-Winner: Recovery Efforts and Investigations Underway

The maritime tragedy involving the Ocean-Winner has reached a critical juncture following the termination of a week-long search and rescue (SAR) operation. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) and the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) have declared the 22 crew members still missing presumed dead. Meanwhile, the two Chinese crew members who survived the disaster, Pan Tonglai and Chen Jianheng, were successfully rescued by the ICG vessel 'Varad' and brought to Paradip on August 27. Their accounts provide harrowing insights into the final moments on board the 'Ocean-Winner'. The sailors recounted experiencing a loud sound followed by an emergency siren as the ship began to take on water. They vividly described the ensuing chaos, seeing colleagues disappear into the darkness and the rising waters, with only a life raft to cling to for survival.

In light of the sinking, the Indian Coast Guard has intensified their search efforts under the coordination of the MRCC Sri Vijaya Puram, deploying additional ships and aircraft. Authorities, including a team from the Directorate General of Shipping in Kolkata, have arrived in Paradip to conduct a thorough investigation into the vessel's stability and cargo conditions prior to the incident. The 'Ocean-Winner' had recently unloaded a substantial cargo of sulphur from the UAE and had taken on iron ore before its fateful departure.
