Tragedy Strikes as Tns-Catcher Capsizes Off Busan, Search Efforts Strained by Weather

The maritime community is grappling with the aftermath of a tragic incident involving the Tns-Catcher, a tugboat that capsized while engaged in maneuvers with other tugs around the containership MSC Ikaria VI off the coast of Busan on September 2. Authorities report that the vessel may have been overwhelmed by towline tension during a critical turning maneuver, leading to its rapid capsizing. Notably, this incident took place amidst efforts to manage the tug's coordination with two other vessels—one pulling from the starboard bow and the other pushing from the stern. Investigators have indicated a possible mismatch in the tug’s speed and timing during the maneuver, although there is yet no confirmation of whether the vessel became snagged on the towline. CCTV footage confirms that the Tns-Catcher was making a turn before rolling over sharply to port.

Following the unfortunate sinking, a comprehensive search and rescue operation was initiated to locate the six missing crew members—a mix of six South Koreans and two Indonesians. Initial efforts spanned from September 2 at 7 p.m. to September 3 at 6 a.m., during which 19 rescue vessels, including those from the Coast Guard and Navy, were deployed across a meticulously divided search zone. In addition, approximately 270 flares were launched in a bid to enhance visibility during nighttime search operations. However, strong winds and adverse weather conditions plagued the rescue efforts, limiting visibility and leading to the suspension of aerial operations.

As the days progressed, the situation remained dire with no sign of the missing crew despite the widening of the search area—now expanded to 66 kilometers by 40 kilometers. The ongoing rescue operations have faced not only challenges from the inclement weather but also from poor underwater visibility at the depth where the Tns-Catcher sank.

Only one Indonesian crew member survived the incident, while a South Korean seafarer recovered from the water later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. The investigation is ongoing, centering on the tug's sequence of events and any mechanical failures that may have contributed to this devastating accident. The regional maritime community remains in a state of heavy hearts, hoping for the safe recovery of the six lost souls at sea.
