Vessel ‘Plus 1’ Detained in Karasu Due to Serious Deficiencies

Jan 06, 2026 19:41

On December 25, 2025, the vessel ‘Plus 1’ faced detention in Karasu due to a startling list of 25 deficiencies, with 19 categorized as severe enough to warrant this action. Among the critical infractions were significant documentation issues such as an inoperative Tonnage Certificate and an invalid International Energy Efficiency Certificate. Additional concerns included an inadequately maintained Oil Record Book, a non-compliant International Sewage Pollution Prevention Certificate, and shortcomings related to the Minimum Safe Manning Document. The ship also fell short on its International Ballast Water Management Certificate and failed to keep other essential certificates up to date. Safety equipment was equally problematic, with lifeboats marked as inoperative and inadequate onboard training procedures for crew members. Furthermore, the conditions on board were deemed unsafe; there were electrical hazards, insufficient lighting in working spaces, and poorly insulated pipes and wires. Ventilation systems also failed to meet required standards, contributing to the vessel's overall unsafe working environment. In addition, issues with auxiliary machinery, structural corrosion on beams, frames, and floors, and communication systems were identified. Pollution prevention measures were inadequate, particularly regarding oil discharges from machinery spaces, and fire safety protocols, including ventilation systems, were not up to par. After addressing these critical issues, the ‘Plus 1’ was allowed to set sail again on January 5. This incident highlights the importance of adhering to maritime safety regulations to ensure the safety of both crew and marine environments.
