USNS William McLean Joins Military Sealift Command Fleet as the Latest Dry Cargo Ship
In a significant milestone for the Military Sealift Command, the dry cargo and ammunition ship USNS William McLean was officially delivered today during a ceremony at the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in San Diego. Stretching 689 feet in length, the USNS William McLean, designated as T-AKE 12, marks the twelfth vessel in the Navy's program, with a total of 14 new dry cargo/ammunition ships expected to be delivered by the conclusion of 2012. The lead ship of this class, USNS Lewis and Clark, made its debut in MSC’s fleet back in 2006. Currently, 11 dry cargo/ammunition ships are actively serving within the command's Combat Logistics Force, ensuring that essential fuel, equipment, and supplies are efficiently provided to Navy warships operating at sea.
