Both vessels were navigating a shipping route that had been cleared of ice by the icebreaker 'Balder Viking'. At the time of the incident, the 'Nemuna' was making its way from Kiel to Kokkola, while the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged 'Hunzeborg' was en route from Rotterdam to Lulea.
