Abeille Méditerranée: The Newest Emergency Tug Arrives in Toulon

Jun 07, 2022 11:56

On July 7, the powerful tug 'Abeille Méditerranée' made its grand entrance into the Toulon naval base following extensive renovations at TKMS/GNY in Kiel. Originally a supply vessel, this newly transformed tug ranks among the most capable in the world, poised to embark on vital sea trials leading up to its official launch on July 1. The acquisition of the tug by Les Abeilles International in 2021 aimed at converting it into a dedicated assistance and salvage vessel, set to replace the aging 'Abeille Flandre,' which has faithfully served for over four decades. During its transit to Toulon, critical sea trials were undertaken to validate the operational towing abilities and helicopter hoisting functions of the 'Abeille Méditerranée.' Once these tests are complete, she will officially serve under the oversight of the maritime prefect of the Mediterranean. Following her baptism on July 1, this formidable tug will embark on an inaugural tour along the Mediterranean coast, visiting prominent locations such as Nice, Cannes, Marseille, Sète, Port-la-Nouvelle, as well as the islands of Ajaccio and Bastia. Newly Converted Tug 'Abeille Méditerranée' Joins Fleet After Successful Overhaul in Kiel

May 31, 2022 11:49

The maritime industry welcomes the newly converted tug 'Abeille Méditerranée', which has successfully completed its renovation at German Naval Yards in Kiel. Arriving in Brest on May 30, 2022, this vessel will serve alongside her sister ship, 'Abeille Normandie', which is set to be christened at the end of June in Le Havre. Both ships are vital intervention, assistance, and salvage tugs (RIAS) operated by Abeilles International and chartered by the French Navy, aimed at enhancing maritime safety. 'Abeille Méditerranée' is tasked with replacing 'Abeille Languedoc' in Pas-de-Calais, while 'Abeille Normandie' will take over duties from 'Abeille Flandre' in Toulon. Currently undergoing final sea trials to ensure readiness for active service, 'Abeille Normandie' features a modified rear structure for optimized assistance and rescue operations. Significant upgrades include the installation of hangers and specialized equipment designed for operating under challenging conditions. Additionally, the tugs are equipped with two MOB Boat type intervention canoes for rapid response. The ten-year charter agreements, valued at €120 million, will bind Les Abeilles to the French Navy, reinforcing their commitment to maritime safety and emergency response efforts.
