Working Conditions Aboard the Abrau

On January 27, 2019, at 06:30 a.m., a significant oil spill took place during a bunkering operation involving the bulk carrier 'Celia' and the vessel 'Abrau' at berth No. 103 in the port of St. Petersburg. The incident resulted in an estimated 0.2 to 0.3 cubic metres of oil spilling onto the deck and into the surrounding waters. Two visible oil slicks were reported on the icy surface of the port, measuring approximately 3 x 1.5 metres and 2 x 1.5 metres in size. The port tug 'Borey' began the cleanup efforts at 6:20 p.m., focusing on removing the oil-snow mixture from the ice next to the 'Celia'. By 8 p.m., cleaning operations had collected around two cubic meters of the contaminant, however, they were subsequently paused. Plans were set to resume the cleanup efforts on January 28 at 8 a.m.

The tanker 'Abrau' is currently undergoing extensive repair work following a significant engine failure and subsequent power loss experienced in the Sea of Marmara on January 14, 2018, at position 40 50 N, 28 58 E. As of February 3, the vessel remained stationary at Istanbul anchorage, unable to make necessary repairs on its own. The owners have since requested shore-based technical assistance, and dedicated repair teams have been deployed on board to ensure the completion of permanent repairs. An initial inspection has also taken place by the class surveyor. As of February 27, the 'Abrau' remained anchored approximately 2.5 nautical miles from Zeytinburnu, with repair efforts ongoing.

On January 18, 2018, at 11 a.m., the tanker Abrau suffered a significant engine failure while on its journey from Novorossiysk to Derince, carrying a full load. Located at latitude 40°50.4'N and longitude 28°58'E in the Sea of Marmara, the vessel lost power and began to drift due to the influence of winds and currents. The dedicated crew promptly initiated repair efforts onboard. After some time adrift, the Abrau successfully navigated to Istanbul Anchorage, where it dropped anchor to conduct necessary permanent repairs to its engine.
