West Africa Gas Limited (WAGL), an energy enterprise co-owned by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Oceanbed of the Sahara Group, is making significant strides towards its goal of becoming a comprehensive energy provider. The company recently ordered and successfully launched a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) vessel, marking a historic accomplishment as the first of its kind by any energy company across the African continent. The vessel, constructed at Hyundai Mipo Shipyard and commissioned in May 2014, is designed to transport Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) with an impressive capacity of 38,000 cubic meters (cbm). Named MT Africa Gas, it made its inaugural journey to Tema Port in Ghana, having set sail from South Korea’s Hyundai Mipo Dockyard. In addition to MT Africa Gas, WAGL is eagerly anticipating the arrival of its second vessel, MT Sahara Gas, expected to dock in West Africa shortly. Roland Omoreegbe, the Managing Director of WAGL, expressed enthusiasm about this pivotal achievement, stating that the acquisition of these vessels is essential for fulfilling WAGL's vision of being the leading gas provider on the continent. He emphasized that this strategic move reaffirms their commitment to addressing the energy demands of consumers throughout Africa and beyond. WAGL also holds a Gas Sale Agreement with the Government of Ghana, facilitating the supply of 180,000 standard cubic feet of gas, while construction continues at Tema Port to prepare for the receipt of first gas to support thermal plants in the region. The company's plans include building a jetty and dredging a shipping channel to enhance operational capabilities.
