Incident Involving Bulk Carrier 'Erisort' Highlights Navigation Hazards in Nordenham
On March 6, 2020, the bulk carrier 'Erisort' experienced a significant shift while berthed at Rhenus pier in Nordenham. At approximately 6:30 p.m., the vessel was unexpectedly moved when the 'Kumpula' (IMO: 9590802) passed by at a high speed of over 13 knots. The 'Kumpula' was navigating downstream on the Weser River, making its way from Bremen to Kokkola, which created substantial swell against the 'Erisort' and caused it to drift a few meters. This shift resulted in damage to the pier, including the dislodging of a bollard. Fortunately, the operator of a nearby port crane noticed the impending shift in time, allowing them to avert a potential collision. In the aftermath, local authorities initiated an investigation into the actions of the captain of the 'Kumpula'. The 'Erisort' subsequently departed for Hamburg on March 14 at 7 a.m. and docked at Kali Quay on the Rethe River on March 17 at 6:20 a.m. For further details, a German report and accompanying photo can be found here: https://www.nwzonline.de/wesermarsch/blaulicht/nordenham-unfall-bei-nordenham-zu-schnelles-schiff-verursacht-schaeden-an-pier_a_50,7,2388253542.html
