Dramatic Medivac Operation Near East London
On September 16, 2015, at 3 p.m., the NSRI East London duty crew was activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) to prepare for a medical emergency involving the vessel 'African Starling.' The ship, which was en route from Brazil to Singapore, was sailing towards East London for a critical medivac operation. A crew member onboard had sustained a serious laceration beneath his right arm, along with injuries to his right side. As the ship came within 10 nautical miles of East London around 11:30 p.m., NSRI East London launched their rescue craft, 'Spirit of Lotto,' which was accompanied by EMS rescue paramedics. Upon reaching the scene, the injured Indian sailor was successfully transferred to the rescue craft and brought safely to shore. His stable condition allowed for swift transport to a local hospital by EMS ambulance for further medical attention.
