Agia Eleni Grounded on Paraná River: A Incident Overview
On September 18, 2019, at approximately 8:30 a.m., the bulk carrier 'Agia Eleni' ran aground on the Paraná River, specifically near the 343 km mark, just south of Isla De Cattaneo in the vicinity of San Nicolas. The vessel, which was heavily laden with 28,600 metric tonnes of maize, had departed from the ACA berth in San Lorenzo with a sailing draught of 9.9 meters and was en route to Cienfuegos. After spending more than a day aground, the 'Agia Eleni' was successfully refloated on September 19 around 11:50 p.m., thanks to the collaborative efforts of the tugboats 'Tumbador I' and 'Cooper Estibador 2'. Following the refloating, the ship was escorted to an anchorage at Ramallo Roads for necessary inspections. To facilitate the reopening of the river for navigation, coast guard authorities conducted bathymetric surveys in the area.
