Engine Failure on Ferry 'Agios Georgios' Near Iraklion
On June 23, at approximately 9:15 a.m., the ferry 'Agios Georgios' experienced a mechanical failure in its port side main engine while navigating 4.7 nautical miles north of Iraklion. The vessel was carrying 12 passengers and 70 vehicles at the time of the incident. The Port Authority of Iraklion was promptly informed of the situation. Fortunately, the ferry made its way safely to the port of Iraklion. Initially, the Central Port Authority imposed a sailing ban on the vessel. However, after receiving a certificate affirming its maintenance and seaworthiness from the designated classification society, the 'Agios Georgios' was cleared to resume its scheduled service.
Adverse Weather Causes Allision at Keratsini Port
On January 9, 2024, at around noon, the Keratsini Port Authority received an urgent notification regarding a maritime incident influenced by severe weather conditions. The stern-moored vessel 'Agios Georgios' was dislodged and subsequently collided with the ferry 'Smyrna di Levante' (IMO: 7527887) at the new Drapetsonas pier, resulting in minor damages. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, and no marine pollution occurred as a result of this allision. In response to the incident, the Keratsini Port Department initiated a preliminary investigation and prohibited the departure of both vessels until the respective classifiers provide proof of their seaworthiness.
Engine Breakdown Delays Departure of 'Olympus' from Piraeus
On the evening of August 29, 2020, the Port Authority of Piraeus received an alert from the captain of the passenger vessel 'Olympus'. Scheduled to embark on a journey to Milos, Thira, and Rethymnon with 82 passengers on board, the ship experienced a malfunction in its electric motor. Due to safety protocols, the 'Olympus' was prohibited from departing until necessary repairs were made and a thorough inspection by the appropriate classification society was conducted. In the interim, the ship's owner ensured that passengers were assisted and transferred to their respective destinations. After completing repairs and inspections, the 'Olympus' successfully set sail from Piraeus on August 30 at 1:10 PM.
