AIDAstella Diverts Course for Medical Emergency, Skips Cape Verde Stop

Mar 18, 2026 10:33

During its Atlantic voyage from Namibia to Cape Verde, the cruise ship AIDAstella encountered an unexpected medical emergency, necessitating a swift course correction on March 17, 2026. While sailing through the South Atlantic on the first of seven designated sea days, the ship had to return to Walvis Bay to facilitate the medical evacuation of a passenger. Walvis Bay, the closest port of call, was originally scheduled for January 16. In the dead of night, the AIDAstella made a calculated decision not to dock but instead anchored just outside the harbor. A boat transferred the patient ashore, ensuring rapid transport to a hospital for further care. Following the emergency medical disembarkation, the AIDAstella reestablished its route. However, the ship's remaining six days at sea were insufficient for it to reach its next scheduled destination, Praia on the island of Santiago, by March 24. Consequently, it was compelled to forgo the Cape Verde stop and head directly to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, amounting to a continuous ten-day journey at sea. The AIDAstella is now on course to arrive in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on March 27, before completing its transatlantic journey at Palma de Mallorca, with a lone stop planned in Gibraltar along the way. The original itinerary for the AIDAstella from March 12 to 31 included: Cape Town – Cape Town – Day at sea – LΓΌderitz – Walvis Bay – Day at sea – Day at sea – Day at sea – Day at sea – Day at sea – Day at sea – Praia (Santiago) – Day at sea – Day at sea – Santa Cruz (Tenerife) – Day at sea – Gibraltar – Day at sea – Palma de Mallorca. The adjusted schedule has now shifted to: Cape Town – Cape Town – Day at sea – LΓΌderitz – Walvis Bay – Day at sea – Day at sea – Day at sea – Day at sea – Day at sea – Day at sea – Day at sea – Santa Cruz (Tenerife) – Day at sea – Gibraltar – Day at sea – Palma de Mallorca.

Oct 13, 2025 10:02

In a swift response to a medical emergency, the Port Authority of Sitia received a critical call from the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) of the Coastal Region-Elektropolitan Coastal Region in the early hours of October 11, 2025. A 64-year-old German passenger aboard the 'Aidastella', which was navigating six nautical miles southwest of Kasos while journeying from Heraklion to Limassol, required urgent medical attention. The ship promptly altered its course towards the Bay of Sitia, enabling the safe transfer of the patient to the fishing vessel 'Manolio'. Accompanied by a medical doctor and an officer from the Port Authority, the patient was then ferried to the port of Sitia. Upon arrival, an ambulance awaited to transport him to the General Hospital-Health Center of Sitia, ensuring he received the higher level of medical care necessary for his condition.
