On November 15, 2023, a significant milestone was achieved in the Polish maritime industry as the Polish flag was ceremoniously raised on the AKUL, marking its official entry into service. This powerful tugboat, now recognized as the strongest to operate in Polish ports, made its homecoming to Gdansk after an extensive overhaul. Originally constructed in 2003 at the renowned Damen Shipyards in Gdynia, the vessel was initially known as 'Kakulo' and served under the French shipping firm Sonasurf International Shipping LDA in African coastal waters. The AKUL has undergone a transformative 10-month refurbishment at the 'Nauta' ship repair yard located in Gdynia, where it was repainted in the vibrant orange color synonymous with the towing fleet of WUZ Port And Maritime Services in Gdansk. With dimensions exceeding 32 meters in length, a beam of 12 meters, and a draught of 5 meters, the tugboat is equipped with state-of-the-art technology including two AQUAMASTER US 3001 stern azimuth thrusters, collectively delivering over 5,500 horsepower. This remarkable tugboat can reach speeds of up to 13 knots and boasts an impressive bollard pull of nearly 70 tonnes, making it an indispensable asset for port operations. The AKUL’s advanced features include double-cylinder pulling winches positioned at the bow, providing exceptional maneuverability that allows for rapid transitions between pulling and pushing operations.
