In response to escalating security threats, three LNG carriers—the 'Al Ghariya', 'Duhail', and 'Al Ruwais'—changed their course just before entering the Strait of Hormuz on July 8, 2026. This decision followed alarming missile strikes by Iran targeting commercial vessels in this crucial waterway. Reacting to the heightened tension, maritime authorities issued a warning, raising the risk level for ships navigating through the Strait of Hormuz to 'severe', prompting some operators to reconsider their routes. All three LNG carriers were en route to Qatar’s Ras Laffan export facility to load liquefied natural gas (LNG) when they opted to return. Additionally, the very large crude carrier (VLCC) 'Lila Vadinar', which was transporting approximately two million barrels of Kuwaiti crude oil, also executed a U-turn off the coast of Oman on July 9, just before entering the Strait. Since the conflict intensified in late February, there have been significant shipping operations from the region, with at least 16 LNG shipments departing from Qatar’s Ras Laffan terminal, alongside another 10 cargoes that have left ADNOC’s facility on Das Island in the United Arab Emirates.
