Collision Incident Involves Al Gharaffa and Hanjin Italy Near Singapore

Jan 06, 2014 10:38

On December 29, 2013, a collision incident occurred between the LNG carrier 'Al Gharaffa' and the container ship 'Hanjin Italy' at 12:44 LT, off the coast of Singapore. The 'Al Gharaffa', which had set sail from Ras Laffan Port on December 19, was significantly damaged in the bow during this mishap, which took place in the Malacca Strait, situated between Batam and Singapore. The 'Al Gharaffa' made contact with the 'Hanjin Italy' on its starboard side, resulting in noticeable dents and damage to part of the cargo onboard. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among the crew members, and the incident did not pose a pollution risk or adversely affect environmental safety. As of January 3, 2014, the 'Al Gharaffa' remained securely anchored in Singapore, where it underwent inspection by the classification society. The results confirmed that the vessel's integrity and operational capability remained intact following the incident. Currently, the situation is under investigation, with OSG Ship Management (UK) Ltd actively collaborating with relevant authorities. It remains uncertain whether the LNG cargo on board the Q-Flex vessel will need to be offloaded as a result of the collision. The 'Al Gharaffa' was headed to the Futtsu LNG terminal, operated by Tokyo Electric Power Co in Japan. The vessel, in which OSG holds a 50.1% stake and Qatari shipowner Nakilat retains the remaining share, is on a long-term charter with Qatargas. In the meantime, the 'Hanjin Italy', which was en route from Singapore to Yantian, China at the time of the incident, was in the process of securing a berth at Singapore to facilitate cargo discharge and subsequent repairs.
