Coast Guard Rescues Injured Crewmember from 'Alexandria' Near Columbia River
On the morning of January 6, 2017, the United States Coast Guard successfully evacuated an injured crew member from the vessel 'Alexandria', approximately 15 miles off the Columbia River's entrance. The 60-year-old male, who had lost the sight in his left eye on January 2, was reported to be in stable condition and was set to receive medical attention. The alarm was raised on January 2 at 3:55 p.m. via an Automated Mutual-Vessel Rescue System alert sent from the Coast Guard Pacific Area command in Alameda, California. At that time, the 'Alexandria' was located 610 miles from the Columbia River's entrance, and the Coast Guard, in collaboration with the ship's captain, devised a plan for the medevac once the vessel was closer to shore. Over the past days, the ship was making best speed towards land, and the Coast Guard maintained a communication schedule with the captain to keep updated on the crew member’s condition. On January 6, an aircrew aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Sector Columbia River launched around 7:30 a.m. and reached the vessel by 8 a.m. They safely hoisted the injured individual and transported him to the base in Warrenton. There, he was met by emergency medical services and taken to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria for further treatment. Mokpo Star Grounded on Columbia River Near Astoria
On February 26, 2014, the bulk carrier 'Mokpo Star' found itself aground in the Columbia River just north of the Astoria Northern Anchorage. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. when the crew attempted to alter their position in the river by deploying anchors without prior authorization. The U.S. Coast Guard promptly intervened, sending Sector Columbia River personnel aboard the vessel along with a Columbia River Bar Pilot to investigate the situation, assess potential pollution risks, and determine the fuel load onboard. In response to the grounding, the Coast Guard mandated the hire of a tugboat for immediate standby and activation of the necessary vessel response plan. Fortunately, 'Mokpo Star' refloated thanks to the incoming tide at approximately 10:50 p.m., subsequently being moved to a secure anchorage with the pilot’s assistance. Encouragingly, no pollution reports have emerged from the case. The Coast Guard has instructed the vessel to remain anchored until a thorough inspection is completed to check for any hull damage. At the time of the grounding, 'Mokpo Star' was docked in the Astoria anchorage, awaiting clearance to proceed upriver to Kalama, Washington. The vessel was not carrying cargo and was estimated to have around 532,000 gallons of diesel fuel oil onboard.
