In the early hours of November 23, 2012, the cargo vessel 'Cecilia' collided with the Sluiskil Bridge, resulting in extensive damage to the structure. The ship, which had departed from Terneuzen just before midnight, was en route to Ghent when it made contact with the bridge on the east side at Zaamslag. Pilot Accident on the Elbe: Ongoing Recovery Efforts

Feb 20, 2012 16:12

On February 20, 2012, at 6:42 a.m., a pilot faced a severe incident while attempting to board the bulk carrier 'Cecilia' at the Brunsbüttel anchorage. As he was about to transition from a pilot vessel to the ship, the pilot unfortunately fell into the Elbe River. Following the accident, the vessel was directed to anchor, and after police investigations concluded, it continued its journey from Bützfleth to Dunkirk, where it was carrying a cargo of fertilizer, at 11:10 a.m. Fortunately, the pilot was swiftly rescued by the pilot vessel near the Old Lock Harbour in Brunsbüttel; however, he immediately collapsed upon recovery. Medical personnel were able to reanimate him, and he was subsequently transported to the Intensive Care Unit at the West Coast Hospital Brunsbüttel, where he remains in critical condition. Reports indicate that the pilot did not utilize the designated boarding platform and opted to ascend via a fallreep without wearing a safety vest, which is mandatory. The situation highlights the importance of adhering to safety protocols in maritime operations.
