Algoma Guardian Bulk Carrier Grounded on St. Lawrence River
On October 19, 2010, the bulk carrier 'Algoma Guardian' encountered difficulties while transporting a cargo of grain and ran aground on the St. Lawrence River, just west of Montreal. The incident occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m. as the vessel drifted out of its designated shipping corridor towards the municipality of Saint-Zotique, located to the east of the Quebec-Ontario border. Following the grounding, tug boats were deployed to maneuver the ship to a nearby anchorage, allowing for vital shipping traffic to resume along the river. Divers have since been sent to investigate the cause of the grounding, although the timeframe for the freighter's return to operational status remains uncertain. The situation is currently under scrutiny by the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corp. and Transport Canada. Engine Troubles Cause Bulk Carrier to Pause at Brockville Yacht Club
On December 31, 2025, the bulk carrier 'Algoma Guardian', which was traveling from Baie Comeau to Port Weller, experienced unexpected difficulties that led to an unscheduled stop at the Brockville Yacht Club. Preliminary reports suggest that a blackout or an engine failure may have been the cause of this incident. The 'Algoma Guardian', finding itself near the 10-meter curve, was closely monitored by the offshore tug 'Vincent Massey' (IMO: 9199622), which was in the vicinity but ultimately rendered no assistance. After a brief moment of instability, where the vessel drifted sideways before stabilizing, the crew managed to navigate back into the channel, turned the bow eastward, and continued its journey. By January 1, 2026, the vessel was safely moored at coordinates 44° 38' N 075° 36' W.
