This second Equinox Class bulk cargo vessel was officially welcomed during a ceremony at Pier 26 South in Hamilton Harbour, attended by local dignitaries and industry professionals. The honor of performing the traditional christening blessing was given to Mrs. Kathy Baske, spouse of Jim Baske, the President and CEO of ArcelorMittal Dofasco. A festive champagne bottle was cracked against the ship's bow, alongside the unveiling of a banner proudly displaying the vessel's name. The ceremony also featured Father David Mulholland from the Mission to Seafarers, who provided prayers and inspirational words for the Algoma Harvester's Canadian crew. Algoma highlights that the Equinox-Class vessels represent the future of bulk cargo transportation within the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Waterway. These state-of-the-art ships are engineered for enhanced fuel efficiency and optimal performance, which significantly reduces their environmental footprint. Remarkably, the Algoma Harvester is anticipated to achieve a 45% boost in energy efficiency compared to Algoma's existing fleet, thanks to its advanced Tier II compliant engine, expanded cargo capacity, and superior hull design.

The 2014 shipping season has started off slowly due to severe winter weather and unprecedented ice conditions affecting the Great Lakes.
