Algoma Central Corporation (TSX: ALC), headquartered in St. Catharines, Ontario, has made headlines with the launch of the Algoma Innovator, the first forward-mounted boom self-unloader crafted in 45 years. This innovative vessel, part of the Equinox Class 650' series, has officially departed the 3 Maj shipyard in Croatia and is en route to Canada, expected to arrive by mid-March with a cargo of bauxite. The company received the Algoma Innovator in December; however, the delivery voyage was postponed to ensure safe navigation given the harsh winter conditions of the North Atlantic. The timing aligns perfectly with the anticipated opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway. This marks the sixth addition of an Equinox Class vessel to Algoma's domestic fleet, which will soon be complemented by the Algoma Sault in the upcoming spring season. Together, these vessels will increase the fleet's number to seven, consisting of four gearless bulk carriers and three self-unloaders. With five more vessels currently in development, the excitement for the 2018 navigation season is palpable. Ken Bloch Soerensen, President and CEO of Algoma, expressed his enthusiasm: 'The Algoma Innovator will be a leader in the river-class segment, allowing us to provide enhanced flexibility to our customers.'
