On December 9, 2020, the bulk carrier 'Algoma Intrepid' encountered trouble while navigating the Welland Canal. The vessel, which was departing from Port Weller, ran aground at 6:43 a.m., just south of Wharf 17 in Port Colborne, as it made its way toward Lake Erie. During the incident, the 'Algoma Intrepid' briefly sideswiped the cargo ship 'Cuyahoga' before finally settling near the Marine Recycling Corp.'s ship recycling yard, a location recently occupied by the soon-to-be-scrapped vessel 'Paul H Townsend'. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or pollution as a result of the grounding.
