On September 7, 2017, at 12:30 p.m., a fire ignited in the engine room of the ferry Almariya, which was carrying 1,668 passengers at the time. The incident occurred shortly after the ferry departed Nador, destined for Almeria, due to an electrical fault. The crew acted quickly to extinguish the fire; however, the vessel became disabled and began to drift off the coast of Nador until around 6 a.m. the next day. Two tugs were dispatched to tow the ferry back to port for safety reasons. Upon returning to Nador, all passengers safely disembarked.
