Velsen Grounding Incident: Alrek Runs Aground in Noordzee Canal

Feb 25, 2017 14:28

On the evening of February 24, 2017, the cargo vessel 'Alrek' found itself aground in the Noordzee Canal near Ijmuiden, becoming ensnared with its stern wedged against the embankment at Park Way, Velsen South. The vessel, en route from Velsen-North to Södertalje, strayed off its navigational path during a turn. Immediately responding to the situation were tugs 'Bernardus' and 'Telstar', which arrived to provide assistance, but not before the local water police conducted a safety inspection of the grounded ship. Despite the setback, other vessels were allowed to pass through the canal at reduced speeds. Finally, at 3 a.m. on February 25, the 'Alrek' was successfully refloated and subsequently docked at Grote Houtkade in Velsen.
