On February 12, 2018, at approximately 5 p.m., the cargo ship "Alsterdiep" encountered severe weather while navigating from Velsen to Bridport. The vessel, which had a crew of ten onboard, reported a significant malfunction of its main engine along with an oil leak originating from the gearbox, causing it to drift in precarious conditions at coordinates 49 56N, 04 56W, near the Lizard Light, with a bearing of 98 degrees. The "Alsterdiep" was carrying 3,386 tonnes of coal at the time. Faced with a southerly gale reaching force 9, the situation was critical. Fortunately, by 9:40 p.m., the crew managed to rectify the engine issues, allowing the ship to continue its journey. Ultimately, the "Alsterdiep" arrived safely in Newport, where it docked at 5:50 a.m. on February 14.
