Rescue at Sea: AMVER Ship Comes to Aid of Solo Sailor off Mexican Coast
In a dramatic act of maritime rescue, the 'Ocean Virgo' successfully saved a 66-year-old sailor from Sacramento on June 13, 2012. The sailor found himself in dire straits 400 nautical miles south of San Diego and 40 miles west of La Playa, Mexico, when his 50-foot yacht 'Reflections' began to take on water after colliding with a breaching whale. This unfortunate incident disabled his steering and caused significant flooding on board. In a desperate bid for help, the sailor activated his Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB), which prompted the 11th Coast Guard District Command Center in Alameda to receive a distress alert shortly after midnight. The command center swiftly acted, diverting an HC-130 Hercules aircraft from Air Station Sacramento to investigate the situation and simultaneously called for assistance from the 'Ocean Virgo', a merchant vessel engaged in the AMVER (Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue) System. The 'Ocean Virgo' was approximately 60 miles away from the distress location, and it promptly set course for the scene. By around 2 a.m., the crew of the Hercules had located the stranded sailor, who was actively bailing water from his flooded vessel and had set up a life raft in preparation for full abandonment if necessary. The HC-130 Hercules maintained a watchful presence until the 'Ocean Virgo' arrived on the scene around 4 a.m., ensuring the sailor's safety. By the time the sun rose, he was aboard the merchant ship, safe and on his way to an eventual return to Panama and ultimately Sacramento. This incident highlights the importance of maritime safety measures and the life-saving efforts of AMVER participating vessels.
