Major Maritime Collision in the South China Sea Involves Wan Hai 288 and AMC Navigator

Nov 23, 2021 10:32

In a significant maritime incident on the night of November 17, 2023, the Singapore-flagged container ship m/v 'Wan Hai 288' (IMO: 9871359), weighing 20,899 gross tons, collided with the bulk carrier 'AMC Navigator' in the South China Sea. The Wan Hai 288 was traveling from Singapore to Hong Kong when the collision occurred with the AMC Navigator, which had just departed from the Yiu Lean Shekou Dockyards, also destined for Hong Kong. At the time of the accident, the Wan Hai 288 was navigating with restricted maneuverability due to an approaching container ship on her port side, leaving her unable to alter course as necessary to avert the crash. As a result, the Wan Hai 288 sustained significant damage to her bow and required assistance from two tugs to reach safe harbor. On November 20, the damaged Wan Hai 288 was successfully towed and moored at Hong Kong Anchorage, located at coordinates 22° 09.67'N 114° 07.10'E. Meanwhile, the AMC Navigator suffered substantial damage as well and was found drifting slowly at coordinates 21° 47.69'N 114° 15.43'E, just south of the Hong Kong-Macau line on the same day. By November 21, the AMC Navigator had managed to moor at Hong Kong Anchorage, position 22° 09.94'N 114° 06.57'E. The vessel later docked at the Yiu Lian Shekou Dockyards Port on November 22 at 1 p.m, marking the end of a harrowing event in maritime navigation.
